Dr. Stephanie Piscitelli’s Introduction to Research students competed in the 2020 Medical Marvels competition sponsored by the Feinstein Institute in Manhasset, NY. Only one team of up to six students from each high school on Long Island is allowed to participate. On January 17, 2020, Hicksville High School hosted an internal competition in order to select one team. Three teams of research students prepared proposals to address the hypothetical challenge: You are the New York State Commissioner of Education. With the measles outbreaks in NYS and an increase in vaccination exemptions in specific demographics, you will chair a statewide task force to develop and implement a strategy to address vaccine hesitancy and increase the immunization rate across the state. The Hicksville winning team , Sonia Virmani, Amelia Psarceas   Katelyn Suarez, Alexa Gomez and Puneet Kaur, proposed several solutions to increase vaccination rates throughout the state by targeting specific demographic groups. Their Contagious Crisis proposal was submitted to Feinstein Institute. On February 28, 2020 the Hicksville High School team presented their findings and poster to a committee of judges at the Feinstein Institute. The students answered questions posed by the experts in the field and were praised for their poise and delivery.
