Government Conference

Omika Samlall, a student at Hicksville High School, will participate in the 20th annual Students Inside Albany Government Educational Conference, which is scheduled to be held May 17-20, 2020 in Albany.  Omika will represent the East Nassau chapter (which meets at the Levittown Library every month, except in the summer).

Omika will have a hands-on learning experience about how state government works.  Omika will meet and work with high school students from across the state to learn about New York State government and the process by which citizens can participate in the policy making arena.  As part of this program, students will also tour the Capitol and observe both the Senate and Assembly in action by spending an afternoon shadowing their legislator.

Local League of Women Voters East Nassau chapter is sponsoring Omika’s trip. League of Women Voters representatives, Ms. Mary Gould, Ms. Dania Smith and Ms. Donna Buthmann interviewed and selected Omika Samlall on January 27, 2020. The goal of the program is inspire Omika and other students to become more aware of the citizens’ responsibility in representative government.
